The Sofia String Quartet began as the string quartet of Bulgarian National Radio. Marin Goleminov’s Microquartet, composed in 1967, is one of the most performed of Bulgarian chamber pieces. Shostakovich composed his 8th String Quartet in 1960 during a breaking working on a film score. It is dedicated to the “victims of fascism and war.” His Piano Quintet dates from 1940 when the full impact of those sentiments became unleashed.
