Volume 7 in the Gega New Shostakovich cycle opens at the end of the war when Stalin expected a grandiose symphony, while Shostakovich’s 9th is a masterwork of understatement. Symphony No. 10, of 1953, post Stalin, Mahlerian in concept, its furious second movement is said to be Stalin’s portrait in music!
