Volume 6 in this cycle of Shostakovich Symphonies features the 5th Symphony, which is probably one of the most celebrated of the 20th century and has no requirement to apologise for past musical failures. It is paired with Shostakovich’s 6th Symphony premiered in 1939. Its unusual structure, appears to have no formal first movement, the Symphony beginning with a Largo.
