Dimitar Uzunov (1922 – 1985) began at the top, from his earliest performances with the Sofia Opera in 1947, continuing through a career of more than twenty years. His roles included – Andrea Chenier, Basilio in Le nozze di Figaro, Calaf in Turandot and the operas by Verdi, Leoncavallo, Bizet, Tchaikovsky and more, heard in this selection of his recordings. Uzunov appeared at the Vienna State Opera, Covent Garden, London, La Scala Milan the Metropolitan Opera in New York and became a frequent guest at European music festivals. After his retirement Uzunov took up producing, staging Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman, the nearest he came to a composer he never sang.
