Ferdinand Hiller (1811 – 1885), a contemporary of Robert Schumann (1810 – 1856) while acclaimed for his Symphony at its premiere, rates hardly a footnote today. Ronaldo Lau’s piano version uncovers a work of contrasting moods and dynamics. Schumann’s Second Symphony, in this piano version, springs to life, in Theodor Kirchner’s (1823 – 1903) transcription, and belies the dark times in which Schumann worked on its composition.
