During his teenage years Jimmy Lopez Bellido (b. 1978) loved reading Cervantes’ novel Don Quixote. He subsequently discovered the authors final novel, The Travails of Persiles and Sigismunda, the 400 anniversary of which inspired his Symphony No. 1. Its four movements corresponding to the four books of the novel. Bel Canto – A Symphonic Canvas is a three movement suite using music taken from his opera of the same name, a commissioned by the Lyric Opera of Chicago.
