Dohnanyi’s First Piano Concerto was composed in 1898 in response to a competition organised by the Bosendorfer piano company. It’s a bold extensive piece. His Second Concerto is more compact, premiered in 1947, played by the composer, at a concert in Sheffield conducted by Sir Thomas Beecham.
