Dvorak told a friend that he’d heard the Requiem of Verdi and the German Requiem by Brahms and “thought to myself  I’d write something similar.”  From 1877, the Stabat Mater is the earliest of Dvorak’s major choral works.  It is rarely performed.  This recording, conducted by Marek Stryncl, uses period instruments of Dvorak’s time.
